Eine der Sanierten Schulen in Indien kann endlich von Schülern genutzt werden.

School projects in India:
how and where it all began

School near Trivandum was born

Today Maria Kasselmann calls it fate: While walking in Kerala, she discovered a run-down building from which cheerful voices echoed. Curious, she inspected the property and discovered that 3- to 6-year-old children were being taught in the “hole.” Daylight only penetrated through carved stones, running water, electricity and school supplies were wishful thinking. The 30 children sat on dilapidated plastic chairs on a dirty concrete floor.

She spontaneously decided to renovate this school and equip it with teaching materials. Back in Germany, the Dutchwoman started a fundraising campaign in her adopted home of Hagen aTW (Osnabrück district). Maria Kasselmann returned to the village with €2,500 in her luggage and commissioned local craftsmen to renovate the building and lay water and electricity pipes. She also purchased tables, benches and teaching materials and had school uniforms sewn.

Uniform

To strengthen the children’s sense of community, the women of the village made school uniforms. They are widespread in India and represent uniformity and equality among students.

Kerala, India

Kerala is a state in southwest India with around 33.4 million inhabitants. With a population density of 859 inhabitants per km², the state is one of the most densely populated regions in India. The capital is Trivandrum with around 750,000 inhabitants.

The name Kerala literally means “Land of Coconut Trees”. Due to the weak industry, Kerala has one of the highest unemployment rates in India. The villages around Trivandrum are densely populated but hardly economically developed. Industry or agriculture doesn’t actually exist.

Due to the weak industry, Kerala has one of the highest unemployment rates in India. The population is primarily dependent on fishing. After the tsunami, people in this region received little help. Above all, they lack clean water, which not only has a negative impact on hygienic conditions, but also has an impact on food preparation. A large part of the population in this region therefore suffers from anemia due to malnutrition. The “Positive Power for Children e.V.” association is also addressing this problem.
